When water first falls as rain, it’s considered to be “soft” water because it hasn’t yet picked up any mineral ions. In most parts of the country, as this water flows through the ground, it picks up ions of the minerals’ calcium and magnesium. At this point, the water is “hard.” Once this hard water makes its way into your home’s plumbing, it can have several negative effects. However, if you have a water softening system installed, the hard water will pass through a special resin that replaces the calcium and magnesium ions with less harmful ones. Treating your water with this softening process can improve the health of your plumbing, appliances, dishes, clothing, and even your hair and skin.
When hard water passes through your pipes and is used by your appliances, it leaves behind a residue known as scale. In your plumbing, this scale buildup will gradually restrict the amount of space for water to pass through. This forces the pump pressure to increase so that it can push hot or cold water through, which puts harmful strain on your plumbing system. Additionally, this mineral-filled water is more damaging to your appliances, such as your dishwasher and clothes washing machine. With a water softening system, you’ll save money and keep your piping and appliances healthier.
When you wash your hair and skin with hard water, the minerals cause much of your natural oil to be removed. This results in your skin being dry and itchy, and it can cause your hair to become frizzy and brittle. Hard water also isn’t as soluble when mixed with soap, so using it prevents you from getting a deep lather. As a result, you don’t achieve as deep of a clean. Alternatively, bathing with softened water will leave your skin and hair soft, clean, and healthy.
